ChatGPT Ads are coming to Europe: What this means for your marketing

The rollout has reached Europe following its launch in the UK — what this means for your marketing and how you can prepare now.

Marketing

You’re optimising your Google Ads, maintaining your SEO and keeping your social media channels active. And in the meantime, ChatGPT has long been answering the questions your customers used to ask on Google. It is precisely within these answers that the first adverts are now appearing: from June 2026, not just in the US, but for the first time in Europe as well. The question is therefore no longer whether your customers are searching for you on ChatGPT, but whether a competitor’s ad block will soon appear alongside your answer.

That’s not bad news, though, because you’re ahead of the game. Adverts are already running in the US, whilst in German-speaking countries you still have a head start. You can make the most of this time. In this article, you’ll get a clear picture of the current state of affairs: where ChatGPT Ads are already live, how they work, how EU data protection laws apply to them, and what you can do specifically to ensure your brand appears when the time comes.

From the USA to Europe: the roadmap for ChatGPT Ads

The path to advertising in ChatGPT was surprisingly swift in 2026. In January, OpenAI announced it would be testing adverts. In February, the pilot went live in the US, featuring discreet blocks labelled ‘Sponsored’ below the actual response. This was followed in the spring by a self-service manager, which meant that not only large clients could book via sales representatives, but also smaller advertisers.

The real turning point for us in Europe came in June. OpenAI launched the adverts in the United Kingdom, the first market outside North America and Oceania. This means that advertising in ChatGPT has reached European soil, even though the UK is no longer part of the EU following Brexit and follows its own data protection framework. For the EU, however, the UK launch is still a significant signal: OpenAI is venturing into European markets, and the continent is next in line.

According to public announcements by OpenAI and the trade press, the adverts will go live by mid-2026 in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Other markets such as Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico are under discussion. A figure from US media reports illustrates the extent of the economic pressure: The pilot is said to have already achieved annualised advertising revenue of over 100 million US dollars, despite the fact that fewer than a fifth of eligible US users actually see any adverts. This channel is therefore not going to disappear again.

How advertising works in ChatGPT

Advertising in ChatGPT isn’t a Google Ads clone. Unlike with Google, you don’t bid on keywords. Instead, OpenAI uses what are known as ‘context hints’. You don’t bid on the word “running shoes”, but specify the type of conversation and the intent in which your advert should appear. If someone asks ChatGPT for the right shoes for their first half-marathon, your offer may appear as a sponsored block below the answer.

Two things are set in stone here. Firstly, only users of the free version and the affordable Go plan will see any adverts at all. Those paying for Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise remain ad-free. Secondly, every advert is clearly labelled as “Sponsored” and visually separated from the actual answer. The advert appears next to or below the answer, not in the middle of it.

Behind this lies a principle that OpenAI describes as an ‘air gap’: when formulating the answer, the model does not know which advert will later be displayed alongside it. This is intended to prevent advertising from skewing the content of the answer. Whether this separation works in practice will only become clear once independent tests compare the displayed adverts with the responses. For you, however, this already means one thing: you cannot buy your way into a good answer. The answer stands on its own; your advert appears alongside it. That is precisely why the quality of your organic visibility remains the key factor that counts.

The reason why ChatGPT Ads aren’t simply available in the EU overnight is data protection. In the US, it is easier to personalise adverts based on user behaviour. In the EU, the GDPR applies, and this requires a robust legal basis for personalised advertising.

OpenAI updated its policies accordingly in June 2026. In Europe, the company intends to show personalised adverts only to users who have actively consented – that is, based on genuine consent rather than ‘legitimate interest’. Those who do not consent will, at best, receive context-based adverts that are tailored to the current conversation, location and time, rather than the history of previous chats. There are further restrictions: no sale of chat content to advertisers, no adverts targeting minors, and no advertising relating to sensitive topics such as politics or health. Advertisers receive aggregated data, not insights into individual conversations.

For you as an advertiser, this means in practical terms: a large proportion of your reach will be achieved through context-based adverts, because by no means all users consent to personalised analysis. Your advert must therefore be compelling based on the context of the conversation, not on a detailed user profile. This is closer to effective search engine advertising than to social media targeting.

In the EU, the Digital Services Act complements the GDPR. It already obliges large platforms to clearly label advertising and not to carry out profiling based on sensitive data or targeting minors. Much of what OpenAI has announced for Europe aligns with precisely these obligations. This maintains the channel’s credibility. However, it is also the reason why the launch is taking longer here than in the US.

When will ChatGPT Ads come to Germany?

There is no official launch date for Germany yet. OpenAI has not specified a date for the EU, and no rollout has been confirmed for individual markets such as France or Germany. Observers expect the launch to take place later this year or in early 2027, once data protection issues have been resolved. This is not yet certain.

So you cannot run ChatGPT Ads in Germany just yet. And anyone who promises you otherwise is selling you lead time as a product. But it is precisely this time that is a gift. When Google AdWords launched in 2000, early advertisers had an advantage for years because they understood the channel before it became expensive and highly competitive. With ChatGPT Ads, you’re practically getting this learning curve for free this time, because you can observe it abroad before it affects you.

What this means for your marketing: the placement you can’t buy

Now comes the part that often gets overlooked. Advertising in ChatGPT doesn’t diminish the value of organic visibility – it actually increases it. Because as soon as paid placements exist, an organic mention becomes the only placement that cannot be bought. If ChatGPT mentions your brand in the actual response because you’re the best source on the topic, that’s a vote of confidence that no advertising budget in the world can create.

This field is known as Generative Engine Optimisation – in other words, the targeted effort to improve visibility in AI responses. It is the logical next step alongside traditional SEO. Anyone who has already laid the groundwork on AI visibility and Generative Engine Optimisation will also be better positioned for the advertising channel, as both are based on the same sources: clear, well-structured, citable content. So you’re not starting from scratch.

ChatGPT Advertising: How to Prepare Now

The preparation largely involves the same work that makes your brand visible in traditional AI responses, and none of the following steps costs anything from your ad budget.

The first step is your baseline. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google in AI mode the questions that matter to your business, and document where your brand appears today. Without this starting point, you won’t be able to demonstrate progress later on.

Secondly: Let the AI crawlers onto your site. Check your robots.txt file to ensure that bots such as GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed to access your key pages. If you block them, OpenAI will be unable to cite your content organically or recognise it later as ad context.

Thirdly: Write in a way that can be cited. AI systems prefer to access clearly structured content that answers a question directly. For example: instead of ‘We offer bespoke solutions’, write ‘An online shop relaunch typically takes three to four months, depending on the scope.” A model picks up on such clear-cut sentences, whilst it ignores vague marketing prose. The same mechanism underpins automations such as data-driven FAQ blocks that improve your AI visibility in marketing.

Finally, it’s worth thinking in terms of intent rather than campaigns. Make a note of the typical conversational situations where your offering fits, and ensure there’s a suitable landing page for each one. You should keep an eye on the official OpenAI Ads Manager whilst doing this: As soon as it launches in Germany, you’ll want to have your brand, landing pages and intents ready to go. If you’d like support with setting this up, our digital marketing consultancy can help you with AI visibility and channel strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions about ChatGPT Ads

Can I run ChatGPT Ads in Germany yet?

No. As of summer 2026, ChatGPT Ads are not yet available in Germany or the EU. They are live in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and, since June 2026, in the UK, amongst other places. There is no official launch date for Germany.

Do all ChatGPT users see the advertisements?

No. Adverts only appear to users of the free version and the Go plan. Those who pay for Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise do not see any adverts. All adverts are labelled ‘Sponsored’ and are separated from the response.

How does targeting work with ChatGPT Ads?

Via so-called ‘context hints’ rather than booked keywords. Advertisers specify the type of conversation and the user’s intent for which their advert should be shown. In the EU, personalised adverts may only be displayed with the user’s explicit consent; otherwise, only context-based advertising is permitted.

What is the difference between ChatGPT Ads and GEO?

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements marked as ‘Sponsored’. Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) aims to ensure your brand is mentioned in the organic AI response without having to pay for it. The two complement each other: GEO builds credibility that no advertising budget can buy.

How do I best prepare?

First, assess where your brand currently appears in AI responses, allow AI crawlers access via your robots.txt file, write clearly structured and quotable content, and plan landing pages based on typical customer queries. This work will immediately boost your organic visibility and get you ready for the ad rollout.

If you take just one thing away from this article, let it be this: work on your AI visibility starts today, not on the day of the rollout. Advertising in ChatGPT isn’t something you can leave until tomorrow morning, but it is the channel that will help shape your marketing mix over the coming years. Make the most of this head start: those who work on their visibility now won’t be at the starting line, but a few metres ahead of it, when ChatGPT Ads reach Germany.
