Zero-click search

The zero-click search refers to a search query that ends without the user clicking on an external search result. The information searched for is already directly on the search results page (SERP), making a visit to the target website superfluous. This is made possible by formats such as featured snippets, knowledge panels, local info boxes and, increasingly, AI summaries such as Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode.

Why there are zero-click searches

Search engines want to fulfil the search intent as quickly as possible. For many queries, a short answer is enough: a definition, an opening time, an exchange rate, a result. Google displays these answers directly. With generative AI, this expands, because now even complex, advice-intensive questions are answered directly on the page by the AI summarising information from several sources. The proportion of searches without a subsequent website visit increases noticeably as a result.

Consequences for SEO and e-commerce

The most important consequence: visibility and clicks are no longer the same thing. A website can be the source from which the AI builds its answer and still not receive any visitors because the user is already satisfied with the answer. Ranking in first place therefore no longer automatically means traffic. In retail, this primarily affects the research phase: comparison, categorisation and initial product questions are shifted to the search, often before the click arrives in the shop.

How to respond

A two-pronged strategy makes sense. On the one hand, it is important to get to the cited sources in the first place, i.e. to provide content that is structured, answerable and with clean schema markup (see Generative Engine Optimisation). Secondly, where the click really counts, you should offer clear added value beyond the pure answer, such as depth, proprietary data, tools or purchase options that are not shown in the summary. Finally, measurement is changing: instead of just looking at clicks and rankings, it is worth looking at how often the brand appears in AI responses and whether brand searches and conversions are increasing.

Differentiation

Zero-click search is not a new phenomenon; it has been observed for years through featured snippets and knowledge panels. What is new is the speed: Generative AI answers significantly accelerate development because they also provide a ready-made answer where several clicks were previously required.

Zero-click does not mean worthless

Effect is created even without a click. If a brand is mentioned in the answer or cited as a source, this leaves an impression, strengthens trust and often leads to direct visits or brand searches with a time delay. Visibility in the AI response is therefore a brand and trust signal that is not reflected one-to-one in the click statistics. An example: If someone searches for selection criteria for a product and repeatedly sees the same provider as a source in the summarised response, there is a high probability that this provider will later be called up specifically.

Differentiate according to search intent

It is important to differentiate according to search intent: Purely informational questions often end without a click, while transactional searches where someone wants to buy or create an account still reliably lead to a page visit. Those who organise their content according to these intentions lose less through zero-click and gain where the click really counts. For shops, this means that information-related content should be designed for quotability, while purchase and transaction-related pages should be designed for a smooth, clear next step.
