Check your llms.txt Find format errors

The check fetches /llms.txt, validates the format against llmstxt.org and shows title, summary, sections and links. If the file is missing, you get a template.

  • Reads public files only
  • No email address needed
  • Free, no sign-up

The check reads the file in the root directory: your-domain.com/llms.txt.

What the check covers

The check follows the proposal at llmstxt.org. Our own llms.txt is an example of a finished file.

  • H1 title

The first line names the website or project as a markdown heading. According to llmstxt.org it is the only required part.

  • Summary

A blockquote under the title sums up what the site is about. AI systems use it as context for everything that follows.

  • Sections

H2 headings structure the file, for example into services, documentation and company. The “Optional” section is special: its links may be dropped when context is short.

  • Link lists

Each section holds markdown links, optionally followed by a colon and a short note. The check expects at least three links.

In context: llms.txt is a proposal (llmstxt.org), not an official standard. Some AI crawlers and research agents already read the file, but it is no guarantee of more visibility.

llms.txt: frequent questions

Your question isn't here? Ask us directly

What is an llms.txt?
An llms.txt is a markdown file in the root directory of a website. It tells AI assistants and research agents which pages matter most, each with a short description. The format is a proposal by llmstxt.org and not an official standard.
How is an llms.txt structured?
It starts with an H1 title, followed by a summary as a blockquote. Free paragraphs may follow. H2 sections hold lists of markdown links in the pattern “- [Name](URL): note”. Links in the “Optional” section may be skipped when context is short.
Do I need an llms.txt?
It is not mandatory. It takes little effort and helps AI systems that read it to find your most important pages. In our AI Visibility Check it counts 1 of 100 points. It matters more that AI crawlers may fetch your website at all and that your content is citable.
What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?
The robots.txt controls which crawlers may fetch which areas. The llms.txt permits and forbids nothing. It is a signpost to the pages you consider most important.
What is the llms-full.txt?
The llms-full.txt bundles the full content of your most important pages in one file. Some AI tools load it as complete context. It is an optional addition to the llms.txt, and the check only reports whether it exists.
