E-Commerce: Shop Data Migration

Shop DataMigration

A platform switch stands or falls on the quality of your data transfer. Products, categories, customers, orders, media — everything must arrive on the new platform completely, consistently, and correctly mapped. We plan and execute data migrations with tested mapping scripts, clean up legacy data from the source system, and validate results against the original before the new platform goes live.

Challenges you'll recognise

  • You don't know how to transfer tens of thousands of products, customers, and order history cleanly to a new platform without losing data or introducing inconsistencies.
  • Previous manual data exports resulted in duplicates, missing images, and incorrect category assignments.
  • The source system has a custom database structure for which no standard migration tool exists.

Data Analysis & Mapping

Every source system has its own database structure. We analyse your existing system, map all relevant data fields to the target schema, and clarify edge cases — product variants, custom attributes, historical order data. The mapping document is the foundation of the migration and makes every decision transparent and traceable.

Automated Migration Scripts

Manual data exports are error-prone and impractical for large catalogues. We develop automated migration scripts that read data from the source system, transform it, and load it consistently into the target system. Scripts are idempotent — they can be run multiple times without creating duplicates.

Data Cleansing

A platform switch is the best opportunity to clean up legacy data from the source system. We identify outdated products, duplicate customer records, and inconsistent category structures, then cleanse systematically. What arrives on the new system is clean and maintainable.

Validation & Sign-Off

After migration, we validate results in a staging environment against the original: product count, order history, customer data, and media files are systematically checked. Only once the acceptance criteria are met do we clear the migration for go-live.

Good to know

  • Mapping is the foundation

A complete field mapping between source and target schema is a prerequisite for a clean migration. Fields without a direct equivalent must be consciously decided — otherwise they land in the wrong place or disappear entirely on the new platform.

  • Idempotent scripts enable delta migration

Migration scripts that can be run multiple times without side effects allow a controlled delta run shortly before go-live. Only the data difference since the last full run is transferred — data loss at the switch point approaches zero.

  • Data cleansing: now or never

After go-live, cleaning legacy data is harder because the new system has already built downstream records. The migration moment is the last easy window to remove outdated products, duplicates, and inconsistent structures.

Frequently asked questions

What data is migrated?
Typically products with all variants and attributes, categories, customers with addresses, order history, media, and relevant configuration data. Which specific entities are migrated is defined together in the analysis phase, depending on the source system and your requirements.
Can the migration interrupt live operations?
Not if planned correctly. We run multiple migration passes in the staging environment and do a final delta run shortly before go-live that transfers only data created since the last run. The old shop continues running until the switch.
What if the source system has an unusual database structure?
Then we analyse the structure at database level and build the migration path individually. No database is too complex as long as we have read access to the source system and can clarify field semantics together.
